The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) was established as a result of the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act. Individual properties, as well as groups of historic structures, may be listed on the NRHP through a nomination process. An NRHP nomination is a formal document that includes:
• A detailed description of the property with notation of any alterations since its conception;
• A statement explaining why the property is significant with a brief summarization of its
history;
• A precise explanation of boundaries or a legal description;
• Photography; and
• A topographical map indicating location.
Districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects are listed on the NRHP if they are deemed to be significant to American history or prehistory on local, regional, or national levels. To be eligible, entities must possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and must be considered significant under at least one of four criteria:
• Criterion A – associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad
patterns of our history;
• Criterion B – associated with the lives of persons significant in our past;
• Criterion C – embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of
construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values
or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack
individual distinction; or
• Criterion D – have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory
or history.
New South Associates is experienced in evaluating and providing assessments of properties for listing and is capable of compiling the information and illustrations needed to complete an NRHP nomination. Once the nomination is complete, the State National Register of Historic Places Review Board reviews it and if approved, nominations are then submitted to the Keeper of the NRHP in Washington, D.C., for formal listing.
