Providing perspectives on the past since 1988

New South Associates is woman-owned small business specializing in the archaeology, history, architectural history, and preservation planning of the Eastern United States and Caribbean. Headquartered in the historic village of Stone Mountain, New South Associates maintains branch offices in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee, providing ready access to projects throughout the southern United States and the Caribbean.

Incorporated in 1988, New South Associates is a founding member of the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA), the only national trade association devoted to the business of cultural resource management.

Cultural resources - archaeological sites, historic buildings, and other remains of the human past - are a protected part of our environment. Federal laws and regulations, as well as state and local ordinances, require that agencies, private firms, and individuals take into consideration the effects of their projects on our nation’s cultural heritage. Projects requiring compliance with historic preservation laws and regulations must identify cultural properties within their limits, determine if such properties are eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, assess the effects of the proposed project on eligible resources, and develop and implement plans to mitigate the adverse impacts of proposed developments on eligible resources.

This consultation process requires specialists trained in prehistoric and historic archaeology, history, architectural history, and related disciplines. The evaluation of cultural resources also requires knowledge of regional prehistory and history, as well as familiarity with the policies of the appropriate State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). In concert with the lead federal agency requiring cultural resource compliance, the SHPO reviews and either accepts or rejects all studies and recommendations made regarding cultural remains. Cultural resource studies are thus best handled by consulting firms who have the specialized staff, facilities, and experience needed to provide well reasoned recommendations and guidance in order to minimize project delays and costs.
