NATALIE P. ADAMS, RPA
Vice President-Archaeology
Ms. Natalie P. Adams,
RPA, serves New South Associates as Archaeologist and Vice President of
Archaeology. She received a BA in Anthropology and History at the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro and an
MA in Public Service Archaeology from the University of South
Carolina. Ms. Adams has more than 15 years of
professional experience in the Southeastern United
States and has worked a variety of project types including
utility and transportation corridors, reservoirs, national forests,
developments, and industrial parks. She has also worked with local historic
preservation groups and has written cultural resource management plans for a
number of clients. Although she has a strong background in both prehistoric
and historical archaeology, her primary interests are in plantations,
backcountry settlements, and rural farmsteads. She is past president of the
Council of South Carolina Professional Archaeologists and current editor of South Carolina Antiquities.

JENNIFER AZZARELLO, RPA
Archaeologist
Ms. Jennifer Azzarello
Pickard is an Archaeologist with New South Associates. Ms. Azzarello received her BA and MA in Anthropology from Florida State University.
She has nine years professional experience and is the author of 11 technical
reports. She has worked extensively in Tennessee,
Alabama and Florida
and has experience working with pipelines and utilities, the Alabama and Tennessee
Departments of Transportation, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and with the
Department of Defense. In addition to her archaeological experience, Ms. Azzarello has conducted Native American consultations for
NAGPRA.

JOSH BLACKMON
Analyst/Research
Assistant
Mr. Blackmon serves New South Associates
as Analyst and Research Assistant. He
began his tenure with New South in August 2005 as an intern, which led to a
permanent position in the Spring of 2006.
His field experience includes Phase I surveys and Phase II testing in Georgia. His laboratory experience includes artifact
analysis and the preparation of materials for permanent curation.
Mr. Blackmon has field experience in both the Southeastern and Southwestern United States.

BRAD BOTWICK, RPA
Archaeologist
Mr. Brad Botwick
serves New South Associates as an Archaeologist. He is also a member of
several professional organizations, including the Council for Northeast
Historical Archaeology and the Southeastern Archaeological Conference. Mr. Botwick joined the New South Associates team in 2000
after 12 years of experience with several private and public organizations.
During his tenure, Mr. Botwick has directed projects
for a wide range of clients, including the US Army Corps of Engineers (Savannah and Norfolk Districts), the Department of
Transportation (South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia,
Maryland, New Jersey), NASA Langley
Research Center,
Federal Bureau of Prisons and the National Park Service. He has experience
with survey, testing, data recovery, transportation, military installations,
urban studies and pipelines. Additionally, Mr. Botwick
has worked on industrial, funerary, prehistoric and military archeological
sites.

CAROLINE BRADFORD
Curator
Ms. Bradford serves New South as a
curator and is currently managing a Cold War artifact collection at the Savannah
River Site. She received her BA in
history from the University
of Florida, where she
is a Master's candidate in museum studies, with a certificate in historic
preservation. Her experience includes
work with historic scientific, medical, and dental artifact collections. She has produced several exhibits on a
variety of historical subjects.

STEFAN BRANNAN
Analyst/Researcher
Mr. Stefan Patrick Brannan is a
laboratory analyst/recovery specialist who has just joined New South
Associates as a full-time employee. He
has more than 6 years of experience in archaeological and historical research
in the southeastern and western United States. He has excavated and analyzed projects in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina
and Georgia.
Prior to this, he attended field school at Pech De L’aze IV, a middle Paleolithic site located in Southern France during the summer of 2001. Mr.
Brannan’s area of expertise includes southeastern archaeology, remote sensing, and total station operation. His current interests include battlefield
archaeology, colonial archaeology, and research theory.

JUSTIN BYRNES
Analyst/Researcher
Mr. Justin Byrnes is a laboratory
analyst/recovery specialist who has just joined New South Associates as a
full-time employee. He has more than 4
years of experience in archaeological and historical research in the
southeastern and western United
States.
He has excavated and analyzed projects for Mississippi Sate
University, the
Mississippi Department of Transportation, the National Park Service, the
National Forest Service as well as a wide variety of private clients. He has
experience in historical archeology, prehistoric archeology, industrial
archaeology, and mortuary recovery.
Mr. Byrnes’ areas of expertise include: historic archaeology,
prehistoric archaeology, mortuary archaeology, and industrial archaeology.

SUMMER CIOMEK
Historian/Architectural
Historian
Ms. Summer Ciomek
is an Architectural Historian at New South Associates. She earned her BA in
Anthropology at the University
of Georgia as well as
her Masters in Historic Preservation. She has experience working in both Georgia and South Carolina. Ms. Ciomek
has completed historical research and architectural surveys on the county and
community level for clients such as Georgia DOT, GTC, and the Georgetown
County Visitor’s Bureau. She also has previous experience performing
archaeological field surveys and excavations.

JULIE COCO
Program
Manager
Ms. Julie Coco serves as the Program Manager at New South Associates,
assisting with proposals, marketing, project
administration and editing in support of department vice presidents. Ms. Coco
has a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland Baltimore
County and an MA in History, with a concentration in Public History and
Historic Archaeology from Middle
Tennessee State
University. She has 9
years professional experience working primarily in Tennessee,
Alabama, and Morocco
-- including experience in: Native American tribal programs and consultation;
Tennessee
prehistoric archaeology; and ethnohistory. Ms. Coco
has co-curated museum exhibits on southeastern
prehistory and history, as well as a large traveling exhibit on the Sijilmasa Site in Southeastern
Morocco.

DAVID DIENER
Director, Graphics
Mr. David Diener
is serves New South Associates as the Director of Graphics. Mr. Diener is a
graphic artist and photographer with over 20 years experience. He has a diverse graphics background,
having managed over 100 film and
digital photography projects. His
experience includes HABS/HAER projects from Key West,
Florida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Additionally, Mr. Diener
has several years experience in GIS software and data and has been providing
graphics for archaeology reports for over 15 years. He is also an experienced illustrator for
displays, reports and brochures.

CHRIS ESPENSHADE, RPA
Archaeologist
Mr. Chris Espenshade, Registered Professional
Archaeologist, serves as Principal Investigator and head of the Greensboro, N.C.
office. Chris has a BA in Anthropology from Wake
Forest University
and an MA in Anthropology from the University
of Florida. He has over 23 years of supervisory
experience in cultural resource management of the eastern United States and Caribbean. Chris offers specialized expertise in
pre-contact and historic pottery analysis, military sites, shell midden studies, protohistoric
cultures, and African American archaeology.
Chris has serviced a wide variety of federal, state, and private
clients, and has worked with federally-recognized, state-recognized, and
self-recognized Native American groups.
He is an active member in the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference
(President Elect 2006-2007, President 2008-2009) and the Southeastern
Archaeological Conference. Chris has
published in many journals, including American
Antiquity, Historical Archaeology,
North American Archaeologist, Bulletin of Primitive Technology. Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology,
Journal of Caribbean Archaeology, Southeastern Archaeologist, Early Georgia,
and West Virginia Archeologist. He has also
contributed to edited volumes including Pottery
of the Carolinas, African Impact on
the Material Culture of the Americas, Upland
Archaeology in the East Symposium VIII and IX, and Ceramics in America 2003, 2004, and 2005
volumes.

TRACEY L. FEDOR
Graphics
Specialist/Designer
Ms. Tracey L. Fedor
serves New South Associates as Graphics Specialist. Ms. Fedor
has a BA in Anthropology from Georgia
State University,
and has more than 15 years experience preparing graphics for cultural
resources. She has performed all aspects of graphics production for the firm,
including graphic design, report production, site mapping,
HABS/HAER-compliant graphics, popular reports, technical reports, digital
photography, informational displays, and brochures. Ms. Fedor
has performed work for a range of clients, and is well versed on graphics
requirements for reports submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the
Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the General Services
Administration, and various state Departments of Transportation.

SHERYL L. GEORGE
Project
Coordinator & IT Specialist
Ms. Sheryl L. George is New South Associates'
Project Coordinator. Ms. George received her BA in Economics and English from
Spelman College and her MS in Sports Administration from Georgia State University.
She has six years experience in management and administration and in computer
technology. Prior to joining New South Associates' staff, Ms. George served
as Executive Secretary to the President of the Georgia Institute of
Technology and as Technology Consultant for the Atlanta Public Schools, where
she was responsible for the installation and maintenance of computer hardware
and software programs. As Project Coordinator, Ms. George maintains New South
Associates' project databases and schedules and assists in the preparation of
materials for proposals and clients.

TERRI GILLETT
Historian/Architectural
Historian
Ms. Terri Gillett serves New South
Associates as Historian/Architectural Historian. She received her Bachelor of
Fine Arts with an emphasis in photography from Georgia Southern University
and Master of Heritage Preservation from Georgia State
University. Ms. Gillett has experience working in
Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee where her responsibilities include historical
research, architectural documentation and analysis for compliance projects
such as cultural resource surveys, historic structure reports, and
transportation studies for clients including the Department of Energy,
Department of Transportation, United States Forest Service and General
Services Administration,

THERESA HAMBY
Archaeologist
and Vice President - Express Projects
Ms. Theresa M. Hamby serves New South
Associates as Archaeologist and Vice President of Express Projects. Ms. Hamby
received her BA in Anthropology from the University
of Nevada Reno, and has more than 16
years professional archaeological experience, the majority of which have been
spent in the southeastern United
States. She has extensive experience
directing a range of archaeological projects. Ms. Hamby has conducted and
reported more than 100 transportation projects, primarily consisting of road
widening or new alignment. In addition, Ms. Hamby and has worked on several
urban archaeological projects, including work for the General Services
Administration and the City of Charleston, South Carolina. Her U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers experience includes working on a large data recovery in Puerto Rico for the Jacksonville District. In her role as Vice President of Small
Projects, Ms. Hamby coordinates the full range of small projects across
departmental boundaries. Her responsibilities
include client interaction, budgeting, and scheduling with the ultimate goal
of providing a smooth project progression from the request for proposals to
submittal of the final report.

JOE IVANOWSKI
Analyst/Researcher
Mr. Joseph Ivanowski
serves New South as both a field archaeologist and a lab analyst. He received
his BA in anthropology from Georgia
State University
and has experience in the archaeology of the American Southwest as well as
the Southeast. Mr. Ivanowski has worked on all
phases of archaeological testing including the analysis and curation of artifacts, site mapping, and site
registration. He has assisted with undergraduate field school and contributed
to a ceramics database for the Southwest. He is also proficient in GPS/GIS
mapping and remote sensing technology.

J. W. JOSEPH, PhD, RPA
Vice
President for Administration and Project Manager
Dr. J. W. (Joe) Joseph serves New South
Associates as Vice President for Administration and Project Manager. A
Registered Professional Archaeologist, Dr. Joseph received his BA in
Anthropology from the University of South Carolina and his MA in American Civilization
and PhD in Historical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania.
He is an Associate Editor of the journal Historical
Archaeology and a member of the Society for Historical
Archaeology's Board of Directors; past president of the Georgia Council of
Professional Archaeologists; and a former member of the Georgia National
Register of Historic Places Review Board. He is the lead author of Historical Archaeology in Georgia,
published by the University
of Georgia's Laboratory
of Archaeology as well as the co-author of the context on historic
agriculture published by the Georgia Historic Preservation Division. Dr.
Joseph has conducted and directed work in archaeology, history, architectural
history, and historic preservation planning; has 28 years of professional
experience; and is the author of 23 published book and journal articles as
well as 152 technical reports. He has worked throughout the eastern US and
has directed a number of projects in Puerto Rico and the USVI and he has
international experience in the Republic
of Panama, France, and Egypt.

LINDA KENNEDY
Archaeologist
Ms. Linda Kennedy, Registered Professional
Archaeologist, serves as zooarchaeologist, ethnobotanist, and interim field director in the Greensboro, N.C.
office. Linda has a BSc in Geological and
Archaeological Sciences from the University
of Leeds and an MA in Archaeology
and Paleoeconomy from the University of Sheffield.
She has over 17 years of supervisory experience in cultural resource
management of the eastern United States,
with a focus on the Carolinas. Linda
offers specialized expertise in zooarchaeology, ethnobotany, African American archaeology, shell midden studies, and archaeology of the French and Indian
War. She has published on slave-made pottery in North American Archaeologist, and has presented papers at the
meetings of the Society for Historical Archaeology, the Middle Atlantic
Archaeological Conference, and the Council for Northeast Historical
Archaeology.

STEVE KOSKI
Archaeologist
Mr. Steve Koski
serves New South Associates as Archaeologist. Mr. Koski
has more than 20 years experience in archaeological research in the state of Florida and has
conducted more than 300 archaeological surveys and excavations. He has
conducted several projects for the Jacksonville District of the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers. Mr. Koski has extensive
experience with underwater excavation, data collection and videography as well as terrestrial archaeology. Mr. Koski is a member of the Society of American Archaeology,
Society of Historical Archaeology, and the Florida Anthropological Society.

KRISTIE LOCKERMAN

Historian
Ms. Lockerman
serves New South Associates as Historian/Architectural Historian. She earned her B.A. in Art History and her
M.A. in Historic Preservation from the University of Georgia. She is experienced with cultural resource
survey and assessment in Georgia,
Florida and Tennessee and has most recently completed
studies for city governments, private engineering firms and the US Army Corps
of Engineers, Savannah District. Prior
to working for New South Associates, Ms. Lockerman
worked on rural architectural surveys of Morgan, Liberty, Catoosa, Gwinnett,
Thomas, Lumpkin and Paulding counties for the state of Georgia Find IT!
Historic Resources Survey Program. She
has also worked as an Exhibit Designer/Producer for Iconic/Ironic: Nine Buildings in Athens, a gallery exhibition
displaying noteworthy buildings from the recent past in the Athens, Georgia
area. Her areas of specialization
include historic resources survey management, historical research and exhibit
design, construction and production.

MATT MATTERNES, PhD,
RPA
Mortuary
Archaeology and Vice President- Laboratory
Dr. Matt Matternes
serves as Vice President of the New South Associates’ Cultural Materials Analysis
Laboratory and as Director of the Mortuary Archaeology Program. He was
awarded a BA in Anthropology from the University of North
Carolina-Greensboro. He has also earned Master of Arts and Doctor of
Philosophy degrees from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where his
studies focused on cranial anatomy and mortuary archaeology. Dr. Matternes' interests in human osteology
and mortuary sites have enabled him to recover and examine human remains from
Paleo-Indian through modern historic cultural contexts. Since 1984, he has
worked with several nationally recognized anatomical collections, as well as
mortuary sites from North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota,
and West Virginia.
He has organized and directed a variety of archaeological and osteological laboratories since 1990. As a materials
analyst, his expertise includes prehistoric pottery and ground stone
analyses. His supervisory field experience includes mortuary and non-mortuary
historic and prehistoric survey and full recovery environments.

HEATHER MAULDIN, RPA
Archaeologist
Ms. Heather Mauldin serves New South Associates
as an archaeologist. She received her BA from the University
of Georgia in 1999, and her MA from
the University
of Mississippi. Ms.
Mauldin has five years experience in the Southeast, including both field and
laboratory archaeology. Fieldwork includes survey, testing, and data recovery
projects in Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida,
and South Carolina.
Laboratory experience includes analysis of prehistoric and historic
artifacts, minimum vessel analysis, vessel restoration, and report
preparation. Her research interests include plantation archaeology, ceramic
manufacture and firing techniques, contact period interactions, and ethnohistory. She is a member of several professional
organizations including the South Eastern Archaeological Conference and the
Society for Historic Archaeology.

MIKE MCCAFFERY
Analyst/Researcher
Mr. McCaffery serves
New South Associates as Field Technician and Lab Analyst and began his tenure
with New South in August 2003 as an intern. He participates in the field and
laboratory phases of archaeological investigation. Mr. McCaffery's
field experience includes Phase I surveys, Phase II testing, and Phase III
data recovery in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. His responsibilities
include shovel testing, digging test units, making
use of maps and site forms, and photographic documentation. His laboratory
experience includes artifact analysis, data entry for archaeological survey
and site forms, and the preparation of materials for permanent curation. Mr. McCaffery has a
BA in Anthropology from Georgia
State University.

SCOTT MORRIS
Analyst/Researcher
Mr. Morris serves New South Associates as a laboratory analyst
and recovery specialist. Participating in all phases of archaeological
excavation, he began his tenure at New South as a field technician in
2003. Mr. Morris accepted a full time
position with the company at the end of 2006.
He has field experience in the Southwestern and Southeastern portions
of North America.

CHRISTINA OLSON
Historian/Architectural
Historian
Ms. Christina Olson serves New South
Associates as Historian/Architectural Historian. She earned her BS in Historic
Preservation from Southeast Missouri State
University and her MHP from the University of Georgia. She is experienced with
cultural resource survey and assessment in both Georgia
and South Carolina.
Prior to working with New South Associates, Ms. Olson completed architectural
surveys in Idaho and for the National Park
Service in Alaska.
Her volunteer work includes cultural preservation planning and heritage
tourism projects for US/ICOMOS in Yaroslavl,
Russia and for the University of Georgia’s
School of Environmental
Design in Ghana,
West Africa.
