Cultural
resources are everywhere in our cities. Each time a federally funded,
permitted, or mandated project is conducted within an urban setting, there is
likely to be a requirement for cultural resource documentation. Urban studies
require specialists, however, who can translate their skills in archaeology,
history, and architectural history to a downtown setting. Because most cities
have been occupied over long periods of time, many cultural resource
consultants without urban training get overwhelmed by the magnitude of
archaeological and historic resources, and lose sight of the forest for the
trees. At New
South Associates, we have historians and archaeologists with considerable
experience in working in urban environments, who can not only identify
resources, but also evaluate them in the context of the city at large and in
comparison with other urban sites. This specialized training provides our
clients with efficient studies that get the job done right the first time,
make sense of all of the noise and data gathered from the city site, present
it in an intelligible format, and evaluate resources within the context of
the city and other urban areas. Mobile,
Tampa, Pensacola, New Bern, Montezuma, Charlotte Amalie, Charleston, Augusta,
Starr, Dalton, Milledgeville, Greenville, Fayetteville, Spartanburg, Atlanta,
Phenix City, Baltimore, Winston Salem, Savannah, Kansas City, Brunswick,
Stone Mountain, Raleigh, Rome, Spring Lake, and Covington are all places
where we have provided urban cultural resource studies. Whether it is survey
and clearance for a small HUD development site in Greenville, excavating the
remains of a forgotten free African-American village in Augusta, or
inventorying more than 100 historic structures and assessing the potential
impacts of new construction on several alternatives in Savannah's National
Landmark District, New South Associates has the resources and experience
needed to provide cultural resource consulting in the urban setting. |
