Cultural resource management is now a worldwide
industry, with many nations governing the treatment of archaeological and historical
sites through laws and regulations. The need to record and manage heritage
sites is also recognized by the Department of Defense for its international
installations and operations, as well as by USAID and other international
programs of the US government. The World Bank and other multilateral lending
agencies include cultural resources as an aspect of their environmental
screening for infrastructure projects and the need manage and interpret
remnants of the past is in increasing demand as heritage tourism drives the
economy of many sectors of the world. New South Associates is a pioneer in
providing cultural resource studies to the international community, and
through staff's participation in international organizations such as the
International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the World
Archaeological Congress, and the European Association of Archaeologists. New
South Associates maintains contacts with archaeologists, historians, and
architectural historians from around the globe who can bring local
perspective and experience to international assignments. Projects
that New South Associates has completed in the international arena include
the development of a Historic Properties Management Plan for all of the American
Military installations administered by the US Army South in the Republic of
Panama, technical assistance and training in site mitigation techniques and
technologies provided to the Egyptian Inspectorate of Antiquities for the
salvage archaeology in the northern Sinai Peninsula, and training of rock art
management and recording in Mexico, Bolivia, Tanzania, and Jamaica. |
