Cemeteries
are unique cultural resources requiring specialized services for their
analysis and treatment. Cemeteries must be addressed under the National
Historic Preservation Act as potential National Register sites during Section
106 compliance, and require evaluation both for their architecture -
tombstones, monuments, vaults, and landscapes - as well as their potential to
provide important archaeological data. More and more southern states are
requiring that archaeologists also handle the identification, definition, and
removal of historic cemeteries. New South Associates has considerable
experience in the treatment of cemetery sites. We are familiar with a variety of techniques used
to identify the locations of historic graves, and have used these methods
successfully on a number of projects. We have worked with consultants
providing expert remote sensing capabilities such as ground-penetrating radar
as well as with more traditional survey methods such as probing and test
trenching. This experience and the ability to accurately recognize and define
cemeteries can only be gained through practical application, and New South
Associates is well regarded for its successful work with cemetery sites. We
have assessed cemeteries for their eligibility for nomination to the National
Register of Historic Places, both above and below the ground, and worked with
in-house and consultant physical anthropologists to identify and interpret
human physical remains. Whatever your needs, from a simple removal and
relocation to a more complicated archaeological data recovery excavation and
analysis, New South Associates is well qualified for work with cemetery
sites. |
